Know Your Presence

Outside of my studio environment I must always have my special hats on. No I'm not talking about costumes, I just mean my hat of presence and of heightening my senses to notice the details of my surroundings.

I've been a man of many hobbies and interests. Yoga is a greater form of stretching to me; however, to many others it is a spiritual task and a greater understanding of ones body. Breathing alone is the key to being a yogi. This is where you need presence the most, where you tend to find the composition around the environment to create the story.

Always remember to smell the roses

And breath the air around.

Distant Traveler

Travel assignments can be some of my most creative projects. When I'm out and about it gives me time to fully express myself as a photographer but most importantly, as an artist. Even in between assignments like stopping for coffee at the airport can sure turn interesting.

For some traveling is one of the most stressful times. I am thankful, I am more patient than when I once was. We all would like to get to where we would like to be, but we have to know there's never a rush just a sense of urgency.

Community Outreach

I'd like to send a special Thanks to Jeff Turner of "In the Neighborhood Deli". Having donated his time to others, especially reaching out to Food For Friends and getting the Turkeys donated for those several hundreds of thousands of joyful people who walked away from this event more than full. Also, a big shoutout to Grand Victoria Casino, who also surprised us last minute with another dozen turkeys and counting. So much food came out of this day that they had containers for people to walk away with. All I can say to end this session is that I'm truly blessed to partake in this communities Thanksgiving, I'm looking forward to my next adventure.

Unlike theme parks there is no age requirement or height requirement, just need the good in your soul. The community of Elgin, IL gives back like Wild Fire. It's truly amazing how everyone saves time to give back on this holiday of togetherness. I've made it a tradition of mine to spend some time on Thanksgiving and give back, as others are spending their time to embrace the big support of lending a hand and a meal. Some of us are truly blessed and gifted with open opportunity; however, for those that aren't they all need support here and there. Having lived in this community for a few short months showed me a lot.

Thanksgiving Jeer is out to spread.  Everyone from the Fire Department Captain, Police Captain; to even the former School Board Superintendent. I had the great opportunity of speaking with the him; Dr. Jose M Torres, it was great to hear that he stepped away to see this community grow and to even see some of his former students out and about lending a hand as well.

Each individual had stories to tell; may they have been new to the area like I, or even the first African American to live on that side of town in 1960. Either way, I'm glad to say we had our piece of pie and had time to share with each other. Salvation Army, also stepped in and helped donate clothing to the less fortunate to keep warm this cold Winter Season.

Black & White Lives On!

For every occasion there's a wardrobe that fits it; however, in some cases it's all about Suiting UP! From a Writer to Corporate headshots, each need to be bold in their own way. In some instances; wardrobe, makeup, and all the fun that fashion has, doesn't have to be accounted for! I said it! it's tough for some to hear, but the reasoning behind this is lighting. This next image you're about to see was created with 8 lights back from my college days.  I've held onto my craft for a long time. I'm a master of lighting and I hold that trick hat high and mighty!

hg_2 copy.jpg

Black and White for me is a nostalgia feeling. It hurts to say, it really does because it shouldn't be remembered as old time feeling. I grew up with film and grew up with Black and White. It already gives you that contrast you want, it gives you the drama your looking for depending on what film you possess. I am forever grateful for having learned, Ansel Adams, Zone System. I still shoot myself all the time, I just wait awhile to develop my rolls. You look at everything through a different looking glass when you have time to wait awhile.

My old friend Andrew stopped by my Los Angeles office. Currently, he's landed himself in the land of Music! Check out their site and stay tuned for Reggae Wednesdays!  I knew right away when Andrew told me about his new job this was the perfect look for him, he just supplied the perfect accessory by adding the mighty pen.

Funny story behind this one actually. Andrew and I played baseball together in High School; however, he attended Clark Magnet High School; they help tap into creative skills; such as, design, editing, and writing. Some may think it sounds just like an X-Men school, when in fact, the real mutants went to public school, like myself. I remember light in spaces like nuns remember the holy bible, sad to say but it's somewhat like a superpower. Super powers or not, his writing and my creative skills are taking us places.  Hopefully we'll be working on more collaborations in the future. Music or not!

Thank The Genie

Recently just got back from a very unimaginable destination. This last shoot was something like a fairy tale. The location always plays a big part of that, Santa Barbara is one of the picturesque towns around. The Trees, the breeze, and always open arms to any guest that comes by. I'm not used to the small time feel; coming from the big city and all, but Santa Barbara has some charm most cities lack.

Wedding season is upon us! I can truly say this is a first for my books. Sadly no animals were involved on this Indian wedding; however, there were the traditional ceremonies and fun festivities going on throughout! Best part about wedding season is that everyone is pleased to be there. To share the joy and happiness of bonding 2 people together for the rest of their lives. It's not just about 2 people, but about bringing 2 families together to be 1 for the rest of time! A wedding is a time to celebrate, party, and embrace the joy of togetherness.

Prized Possession

Happy Independence Day!

Always waiting to get to the next plateau. SUIT UP!

It's every freelancers favorite holiday. A day to be thankful for where we are. I've had some struggles over my short life but as I've known since Kindergarden, I'm destined for greatness! Well that and I've always been able to wear a damn good suit.  I can't say I've known what I wanted to do in life, I just knew I'd be great at whatever I put my mind to.

My imagination has always been large and in charge. My grandfather showed me the ropes; from music to cartoons, I was fascinated by a lot. Classic Looney Tunes still guide and inspire my vivid imagination. It's something that will always feel the same for me, as if it were new.

Over time some things lose value. However, we must all hold value on certain objects. This may take a toll on your heart, loving the tiniest things forever as if it were your child. The greatest thing I've found out about my cuban roots is that they sure can hold onto objects. Why? Because each object; as small as it may be, tells a story.

yearbook.jpg

What's next?

A yearbook is all about memories. This book holds the best memories ever created, it is my prized possession. This book was my first book ever created! I joined the yearbook staff in 8th grade, writing an essay applying for the class, beating out several kids for a unique opportunity that forever changed my life.

I can't take all the credit, it was a team effort. Bonding with everyone in that class was a privilege. I would say some of them found their careers close to home as well. May it be editing, writing, or like me. Photography.

That was the first book I created, but it won't be my last. I currently have 2 that I've custom made for my portfolios. Although, one day I'll be on the fine art world creating my own book with a new series to go with it. Either way, I know my true passion in life. Only forward movement now, who know's what's next?

Progresiva-A Definition

Orlando Johnson, NBA Guard (UCSB 2011)

Long ago I learned a phrase called Progresiva! In Cuba, "Progresiva" was an Elementary through High School education program that most my grandparents family went to. This also included some college courses as well. Learning is always about progressing, each and everyday. You can never quit learning, even when we turn old and grey there's always something new to learn. All you can do is be open minded and take it all in. Always Progressing!

I had the privilege of photographing Orlando Johnson during my studies at Brooks Institute of Photography. Orlando is a prime example of "Progresiva". Then he was a top prospect for UCSB on his way into the NBA. Now, the team that drafted him; The Indiana Pacers, are in the playoffs. He got traded in the midst of the season but he helped get them where they're at now. Still to this day Orlando flourishes showing off his talents to the most of capabilities.

Behind the Scenes, seen here capturing the essence of an athlete (2011) Photographed by Benjo Arwas.

As the saying goes, "All for One, One for All". Progresiva isn't just for athletes, it's for all. Seen below is one of my close friends, Benjo Arwas. He too is another prime example of "Progresiva". He assisted me that day, furthering my series and helping make what it is today. Don't compare us; there's always room for another photographer in this world, as long as we progress with what we love.

Sosa 1.0 is what I like to say, in the steps of learning.

Now you know this saying I live by. Film for me has always lead my path and forever will, it is one way for my soul to speak. Looking into the past just brings insight of what else I need to do to get to where I want to be in life. I've come a long way since then, pushing my career to greater days and even getting a healthy mind on life. Take each day as a new day; a day to learn, progress, and most importantly KICK ASS!

Co-Pilot Take Over

"The next following days won't be about my story but will be about my great Co-Pilot Wild Bill. I'm taking a step back from it all to enjoy life.  I have been way too wrapped up in technology to see the true beauty that surrounds me at my new destination. It's been a bit challenging adapting to the cold, everyone deals with it in their own way. Gotta keep focused on you and soon enough you'll get to where you want to be." -AMS

Keep focused ahead, reward and promise are waiting on the other side.

10 min into his endeavors.   This is where the name "Wild Bill" was born.

Another day, another adventure!  You have to live and learn each day. Ice was not the funnest to drive on, especially when you literally do donuts on the highway. Luckily we were both A-OK. The one positive thing about snow, it works as a great safety pillow.

Stay tuned for more adventures and destinations.

What These Eyes Have Seen

Come with me and you will see!

It's been far too long, but then again sometimes you gotta disappear to start an Adventure. As the song says it, I am "Safe and Sound." My journey ahead was a very long one indeed, seeing as I left on January 1st! Let's start off by showing you how it all started.

Thanks to Roadtrippers I was able to set ahead and see how long it would take for me to get to certain destinations and how much gas it would take.

My philosophy lately in life has been to be as progressive as I can each day at a time, focused on the now and not the then. However, we all need change to advance in life. Yes, that is a risk in itself but it just has to be done if you want to "Level Up". That is what I stuck by, as I walked out the door one last time and packed up my life in literally 2 days.

Sayonara for now California.

Adventuring across the country in uncharted waters and unfamiliar territory.  On the journey ahead to see familiar faces and reconnect with old friends.

The game of Life isn't the easiest game in the world, if so we'd all be enjoying our cake by now. The journey ahead doesn't have to be a 1 person game. I luckily thought of this before hand, my friend so happened to be available to start a new chapter himself.

Bill the Adventurer, along for the wild ride ahead. What lies ahead for the both of us is just a mystery waiting to be solved.

That day I trusted my gut and left on the first day of the year to set off a new Chapter in my life. Who knows whats next for Bill and I, I'm just taking life one day at a time until I reach where I want to be next in life. For now, Adventure on and enjoy what's at hand.

Look forward for more of the Road Ahead; one last look of some California Beauty in the Mojave.

A Journey Ahead

Things are progressing here; as I took each day one day at a time and pushed myself to get to where I'm at. I could not have gotten here without the help of some very special friends & family. My next Chapter in life is coming up sooner than I can even imagine. As of December 30th I'll be splitting out of LA for a little while and starting a new journey.  I've set out and am going to make a cross country road trip. Reconnecting with old friends along the way, starting the new year fresh and hopefully leaving a large imprint on others lives.

Dive Into A New World!

My final destination on my game of life is Cleveland, Ohio. So far, it's looking like a 36 hour drive and I may possibly do it solo with my camera gear and that's it. Just know, I'll be living my dreams and getting out into the world.  I landed a job offer for a short time being, still applying my creative field and using my photography magic to the fullest! The big picture is who knows whats next. I try to wonder and imagine my new path and new journey; although, all I can imagine is the thought of being still and aware of just what's still in front of me for the days I have left here.  I'll be back sooner than you can imagine LA, keep on your toes and watch out for this new road warrior!

Happy Holidays!

The Holidays are underway in all parts near and far. Time to give back & go that extra mile! At the end of the day everyone wants to think of themselves but this time makes us think more about everyone else. Any sort of gift is a plus; that is how you have to think of it, you need to be memorable and creative and just give from the heart.

Welcome to Geppetto's workshop. Magic and Holiday Cheer passed around the Sosa life.

Here's a view into one of my workshops. Show your holiday spirit and get out, create it already!  To those that have to travel, safe paths ahead to and from whatever destination you choose to go to. Sure, everyone gets upset about traveling during holiday seasons. Although, it is about going "Home" wherever that may be; or, finding your true home and just having  a good time with friends and family. Either way have some fun!

During this cold winter time it's good to stay warm. Let's start that off by keeping your sweet tooth warm. It's good to sit out by the fire; kickback, relax and just enjoy what's in front of you and what's to come. We have to reflect on ourselves and how much we've done this past year.  Most importantly try to focus on what big adventures are to come! Wonder what bigger brighter spots to come in 2014! (No "burning" necessary)

From Me to You, Happy Holidays here at Sosaphoto and Have a Happy New Year!

Pub Crawl

This past week I found out one of my images made it all the way to Publication! Crawling my way into the editorial world. Thanks to the Fess Parker, published my work as an Ad insert for one of their unique accommodations!

Lately in life I've noticed a lot of my friends & family can't go to the next step in life & travel because of pets being by their side. A pet is more than a responsibility, they're a best friend for most and they must be along for the adventure, anyway possible! Fess Parker Double Tree is one of the only dog friendly hotels in Santa Barbara. If your ever in the area and need a weekend trip, just don't forget your best friend.

Published in Fido Magazine

This shoot was a ton of fun for me. Both dogs that I photographed were some of the most outgoing and personable dogs I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. What made this shoot fun was trying to keep the dogs calm, trying to get that scene that I pictured in my head to reality.

Hera, enjoying the view. ©Sosaphoto2013

The dogs are allowed on all parts of the property; however, there are certain buildings that allow the dog visitors residence of course. I'm sure Hera (above) loved the view she had that day. It sure was difficult to get her attention when the beach was literally across the street and the pool was right behind her. I know, so many options, so little time. Don't worry I'm sure she loved her stay either way.

Scarlett for Delivery! ©Sosaphoto2013

Don't try this at home! We conquered the impossible that day by getting Scarlett(above) on the luggage cart and keeping her nice and calm. She really wanted to see how hard the job was; apparently easier than she thought because she didn't have to do any of the pushing. For me, this shoot brought a lot of patience. Animals are a lot like children, you need to be calm around them but yet somehow pull their attention without having them get too excited.

Taking A Risk

Thanksgiving is right around the corner people! If you haven't noticed yet I sure love food. Sometimes you gotta take an edge and create something new with a twist. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to try some new recipes and get that food out the door. Just try and not make anyone sick by the end of the day. We want to keep everyone around for the next holiday.

Spice on the mind; ©Sosaphoto2013

I like some spice in my life, it keeps things interesting. Green, red, yellow orange who cares as long as we get that kick in the butt when you take that first chomp! I can be a basket case sometimes so these peppers fit perfect in a basket for 3. This isn't what I'm bringing to Thanksgiving because it can be more filling than the turkey itself; however, it sure was delicious. Wrap this sucker in bacon and if you want to stuff it with a hint of cheese and some chicken, it may just knock your socks off at the end of the night.

Active Lifestyle

Lately, I've felt rejuvenated. Most people would say I'm a morning person; I'd say I just love sunlight that much! You have to think of yourself in life as a plant, everyday you need sunlight and food to grow. Everyday needs to be a productive and kick butt kinda day! Sleep is for tomorrow, then again tomorrow never comes around when your having fun.

Get in that AM zone!

I did this shoot not to long ago in Santa Barbara for the Fess Parker Double Tree. I planned it out about 2 or 3 months in advance. Finding models and getting the location dialed in right on time. It was a really fun shoot for me. When people say they hate Monday's, I just laugh about it because as you see my Mondays sure are quite different from most.

Monday's are the WORST! Not for me.

An active lifestyle is the only lifestyle I know as of late. Everyone wants to know what's got me ticking as of late. Once you get all the kinks and distractions out of the way you start to focus on the main objective and really start to give it your all to one thing. I'm pleased that I can build on my career, hobbies and loves and yet really give it my all to what I love to shoot everyday! Keeping fit helps as well, it keeps my mind and body at peace and lets me focus on what I need to focus on in life.  This shoot really let me sink in to this idea and notion of where I'm at in life. Hope you enjoy the shots and get your fit on!

Get Your Fit On!

A Helping Hand

A few weeks ago I got the privilege of helping a hand on a fun shoot. I had to chase around kids, food; oh, and a dromedary named Bert.

The Patrol Challenge is where Boy scouts and Girl scouts all over Southern California get a list of clues and tasks they must complete in and around LA.  Scouts grow by each task they complete; although, adults are there every step of the way for guidance.

The best part about this event is that all the items collected by the troops were being donated to Charity. As well as canned goods. By the time we were getting ready to leave the event it was an amazement to see 4 truckloads worth of canned goods going to Charity! I'm glad I can lend a hand and always help a good cause!

Patrol Challenge 2013. Hosting Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts all over Southern California.

Troops had a list of items that had to be found and brought back. Just like a scavenger hunt, except some items were a little challenging. (Dinosaur poop, little brother or sister)

Kids getting creative as they had to create a Super hero and Arch enemy. Some Parents were the victims here or test subject.

One younger troop as they sing their troop anthem.

Bert, the dromedary. Patrol Challenge Mascot. Bert and I became really close friends at the end of all this.

Treat Yo' Self

Hope everyone had an eventful and fun Halloween! It's been a great month for me on this side. Tons of adventures throughout the jungle of LA and more.

Halloween is over so we gotta find something to do with our used pumpkins. Get creative with your pumpkins, I made this pumpkin chocolate chip muffin. The best part about this self project was getting the smoke/steam fresh off the chocolate chips as if it were fresh out of the oven. If you don't know yet, I've styled most of my own food shots myself and am growing at it each and everyday.

Right As It Bakes; ©Sosaphoto2013

Keep me posted and let me know if you guys do anything creative with your pumpkins.  The other fun part about this shoot was the lighting, I had a packed set with intricate lighting set ups and at one point it was started to look like a carnival haunted house.  That's what you need sometimes to get specific parts of the muffin to show off like the delicious warm chocolate chips that came fresh out of the oven.

Downtown Glow Run!

About a month ago I got the opportunity to shoot the LivingSocial 5K Glow Run!  The coolest thing about the 5k is that at the end of the race they had a dance party as well.

It was set in Downtown LA at the Historic Park.  The weather that night was historic in it's self; the harvest moon was just coming to an end and the clouds had been rolling in! Here are a select few of images from that night.

LivingSocial 5K Start, ©Sosaphoto2013

There was a very large turn out of runners.  There had to be multiple start off times because of the amount of people.  Luckily, I'm in somewhat of decent shape as of late since I had to catch up to some of the runners.

Take off!, ©Sosaphoto2013

I'm an architecture guy myself, so when I see the right moment for the best view I catch it! Towards the end of the race I got that opportunity; the racers were running through these dance tunnels that had changed colors and played music throughout.  It aligned perfectly with Downtown right as the runners were coming close to the finish line. Everyone charged full speed ahead!
