Creative Funk

"It'll pass, it all does." Some days feel as if you have no control over what will happen over the tenuous schedule throughout your day. As a creative; even with all the projects I have going on, you can still fall into a funk. When I was younger I would know I'd be falling into an uncontrollable funk when I'd be dreaming about food even after lunch. Breaking out of habits is what will create a new habit. When I feel as if I've invested my mind and matter into a situation too much I try to find the simpler things.

No matter what the content is, you may still find yourself in a funk, even if you are not a creative. I rely heavily on two things, my camera and my hobbies. Cycling is one of my favorite hobbies, and taking my camera with me on the adventure is the real plus. Allowing myself to interact with my trip, knowing that there is no time limit just to coast and feel the breeze and know why everyone else is out today; or the real question to ask, what is everyone doing out today?

One key to my successes is to be open to ideas and also hopefully others would be open to your ideas. I've had athletes, models, and regular joe's sometimes have some difficulty trying an additional idea for our session. What keeps my creativity ticking is my art for it all. I've always had a passion for sketching and love seeing great graphic design, I'm no graphic designer but some of the concepts I've seen I try to emulate into my photographs. The shapes and forms help me understand the simplicity we as humans must have when we interact with objects and other humans.

Back in Action

Coffee is all around being. Café is all around culture in my family. It's hard to have a creative project without getting coffee of any sorts involved. It lands itself as the starting ignition to every beginning or ending if it's in the right dessert.

IMG_8647 2.jpg

On this assignment, I traveled to Hollywood to photograph a unique way to serve coffee. At Alfred's in the Alley espresso cups on the go are best served with an edible treat. No matter the time of day, there's always a place and time for some recharge that let's you consume each drip to the very essence.

G.O.A.T

Remember the memories that created you and stood by you to become the person that you are. I love sports, and seeing your child hood icon close out his final chapter in his playing career is a big phenomena that lasted around the entire NBA. Kobe Bryant will forever be missed and is known to me especially; as the greatest of all time.

Iphone-ography at it's best

For this trip, I traveled to Milwaukee, which is about a 90 drive north of Chicago. Growing up being a constant Lakers fan drew me to the obsession of this game. You must find what fuels you and pushes your self motives and inspirations, not just related to your career but related to your life. We live once and we all must make the most of it with the magic we are supplied with; at all costs.

Gone In A Flash

Over my years in this industry, the photographer life is one with many avenues. You never know where an assignment will take you in life. My most recent assignment took me to the "World's Largest Corn Maze" which included a run/walk for participants. One of the fastest recorded times was close to 12 minutes. I believe the record was actually broke in seconds, but who am I to judge since no one was quick enough to catch the Flash except myself.

Some of the best experiences I get is meeting the people who come to these sort of magical places. For me it's about hearing those stories of why they came out that day and what makes memories like that so special to a family, a child or even from a dogs perspective. No matter the temperature (as cold as it got that day, close to low 30's) there's always a turnout. There's the rest of society who chooses to sleep in and dream a little longer; however, as a photographer I choose to take that reality we have in front of us and transcribe it to create a dream like look. Whoever missed out will feel right in place with the rest of the explorers from that day. No matter the subject, the character or place it's about recreating the dream so that each viewer is welcome to enjoy whatever endeavors they seek.

Know Your Presence

Outside of my studio environment I must always have my special hats on. No I'm not talking about costumes, I just mean my hat of presence and of heightening my senses to notice the details of my surroundings.

I've been a man of many hobbies and interests. Yoga is a greater form of stretching to me; however, to many others it is a spiritual task and a greater understanding of ones body. Breathing alone is the key to being a yogi. This is where you need presence the most, where you tend to find the composition around the environment to create the story.

Always remember to smell the roses

And breath the air around.

Distant Traveler

Travel assignments can be some of my most creative projects. When I'm out and about it gives me time to fully express myself as a photographer but most importantly, as an artist. Even in between assignments like stopping for coffee at the airport can sure turn interesting.

For some traveling is one of the most stressful times. I am thankful, I am more patient than when I once was. We all would like to get to where we would like to be, but we have to know there's never a rush just a sense of urgency.

Testing 1-2-3

Testing is all important in the life of a photographer. Everyday, I'm testing something new. May it be new locations, new models and most importantly new gear.

WARNING! Be cautious while location scouting.

For me, when I'm location scouting I'm trying to see how light reacts and how nature reacts to it. Usually I'll keep a scouting camera in my car; for instance, a GoPro does so much justice on the road.

Selfies are just a set of an example.

Be prepared for bailing models, it happens. Have a friend ready for adventures, if not be prepared to to snap a selfie. Your just seeing how skin reacts to the lighting set around you, in this case it was a glorious day and the overcast works brilliantly with skin tones, yet the harshness of the Sun gives a natural edge light.

Last but not least, test your equipment. My favorite thing is to bring my little GoPro buddy with me on assignments. From this editorial, I created a promotional video showing the creation of one of Acadia's newest dishes. Testing my video capabilities on my GO helped to show the client an understanding of what direction we could take when we do bring the full production in.

Forensic Files

To Try is To Do.

Plenty of people forget this term and are careless about trying the new things given to us. Pizza was never a big thing in my family; however, currently residing in Chicago makes it tough to fade away from pizza. You can throw everything on there even the kitchen sink; but lets make it simple and start off with the classic Sardine

Fish is a great way of finding the necessary protein and vitamins a lot of us can't pick up in our regular diet. The main thing about these little creatures is that they always remember to stay hydrated, that's the key!

Here's another fun shoot that I have done with a food stylist; Jason Wheeler. He has some awesome work and some of the best company to have around as well!

One heads up though, this experiment of a shoot got to get a little dark, in a Dexter kind of way.
Viewer Discretion is Advised!

Prepping your fish is one of the most important parts; you have to lay out which pieces are nutritional and which may just make you sick for too long. We've all heard of the blowfish technique, if not, I advise you to look it up. Don't forget to finish it off Cuban style and knock the head off the hen!

No matter the gruesome journey that had to be taken to get here, this is the same process with every food we it. May it be a chicken, a cow or even a pea. It's the state of being a man and providing food for the family.

On that note! Let's see what awesome fun stuff we got to create with these beautiful creatures that gave up their soul for our imagery. Also, big thanks to "Big & Little's" in Chicago. Great food dive, gave me the idea for this dive below!

Always a kids favorite, dunking the Fish in some batter and oil to make Fish n' Chips!

Community Outreach

I'd like to send a special Thanks to Jeff Turner of "In the Neighborhood Deli". Having donated his time to others, especially reaching out to Food For Friends and getting the Turkeys donated for those several hundreds of thousands of joyful people who walked away from this event more than full. Also, a big shoutout to Grand Victoria Casino, who also surprised us last minute with another dozen turkeys and counting. So much food came out of this day that they had containers for people to walk away with. All I can say to end this session is that I'm truly blessed to partake in this communities Thanksgiving, I'm looking forward to my next adventure.

Unlike theme parks there is no age requirement or height requirement, just need the good in your soul. The community of Elgin, IL gives back like Wild Fire. It's truly amazing how everyone saves time to give back on this holiday of togetherness. I've made it a tradition of mine to spend some time on Thanksgiving and give back, as others are spending their time to embrace the big support of lending a hand and a meal. Some of us are truly blessed and gifted with open opportunity; however, for those that aren't they all need support here and there. Having lived in this community for a few short months showed me a lot.

Thanksgiving Jeer is out to spread.  Everyone from the Fire Department Captain, Police Captain; to even the former School Board Superintendent. I had the great opportunity of speaking with the him; Dr. Jose M Torres, it was great to hear that he stepped away to see this community grow and to even see some of his former students out and about lending a hand as well.

Each individual had stories to tell; may they have been new to the area like I, or even the first African American to live on that side of town in 1960. Either way, I'm glad to say we had our piece of pie and had time to share with each other. Salvation Army, also stepped in and helped donate clothing to the less fortunate to keep warm this cold Winter Season.

Thank The Genie

Recently just got back from a very unimaginable destination. This last shoot was something like a fairy tale. The location always plays a big part of that, Santa Barbara is one of the picturesque towns around. The Trees, the breeze, and always open arms to any guest that comes by. I'm not used to the small time feel; coming from the big city and all, but Santa Barbara has some charm most cities lack.

Wedding season is upon us! I can truly say this is a first for my books. Sadly no animals were involved on this Indian wedding; however, there were the traditional ceremonies and fun festivities going on throughout! Best part about wedding season is that everyone is pleased to be there. To share the joy and happiness of bonding 2 people together for the rest of their lives. It's not just about 2 people, but about bringing 2 families together to be 1 for the rest of time! A wedding is a time to celebrate, party, and embrace the joy of togetherness.

Prized Possession

Happy Independence Day!

Always waiting to get to the next plateau. SUIT UP!

It's every freelancers favorite holiday. A day to be thankful for where we are. I've had some struggles over my short life but as I've known since Kindergarden, I'm destined for greatness! Well that and I've always been able to wear a damn good suit.  I can't say I've known what I wanted to do in life, I just knew I'd be great at whatever I put my mind to.

My imagination has always been large and in charge. My grandfather showed me the ropes; from music to cartoons, I was fascinated by a lot. Classic Looney Tunes still guide and inspire my vivid imagination. It's something that will always feel the same for me, as if it were new.

Over time some things lose value. However, we must all hold value on certain objects. This may take a toll on your heart, loving the tiniest things forever as if it were your child. The greatest thing I've found out about my cuban roots is that they sure can hold onto objects. Why? Because each object; as small as it may be, tells a story.

yearbook.jpg

What's next?

A yearbook is all about memories. This book holds the best memories ever created, it is my prized possession. This book was my first book ever created! I joined the yearbook staff in 8th grade, writing an essay applying for the class, beating out several kids for a unique opportunity that forever changed my life.

I can't take all the credit, it was a team effort. Bonding with everyone in that class was a privilege. I would say some of them found their careers close to home as well. May it be editing, writing, or like me. Photography.

That was the first book I created, but it won't be my last. I currently have 2 that I've custom made for my portfolios. Although, one day I'll be on the fine art world creating my own book with a new series to go with it. Either way, I know my true passion in life. Only forward movement now, who know's what's next?

Buried Treasure

Some of you may know I traveled out East! That's a rare find for someone to travel East and not West. Never the less, I still do what I love and let my passion for photography guide my life sometimes. I would've never pictured myself to be a journeyman but that time has come. As a photographer, every image has a deeper meaning than most may think.

An image truly says 1,000 words.

When a photographers portrait is taken, some say their soul is captured as well. I try not to think of this image much; however, when the person taking it is no one. Then isn't it almost like fate caught me off guard? I recently got a GoPro and I forgot it was even running when it snapped this picture of me during my 37 hour journey.  After a week's time is when I noticed this image. It is the only image I have of me in my entire trip.

Are you ready for the Summer Splash?

Behind the Scenes (©Anibal Sosa) aka Poppa Sosa!

In March, I embarked on a journey I never dreamed of. Traveling to Santa Barbara, for something more memorable than I can ever imagine.

My clients have always been number 1 in my life; Fess Parker Double Tree, has been my best relationship in my life. After 4 years I've come a long way and helped their photography grow as a whole. My motto has always been "Never Stop Creating."

This hands down has to be one of the funnest shoots I've had in my young career. The children that day were a blast to work with! It makes my life easier when the "talent" is very open to many ideas. I can easily say they let my imagination come to life.

I myself have grown a lot with Fess Parker always by my side. From photographing events to producing, casting, retouching and styling. Just about everything for their updated room catalogs to new and upcoming Ad Campaigns. The one rule that has always fueled me is how much I can think out of the box and still find something amazing out of nothing. If you don't know by now after looking at all this Magic, my clients always come first.

Santa Barbara will forever have a big place in my heart. Be back REAL soon.

What These Eyes Have Seen

Come with me and you will see!

It's been far too long, but then again sometimes you gotta disappear to start an Adventure. As the song says it, I am "Safe and Sound." My journey ahead was a very long one indeed, seeing as I left on January 1st! Let's start off by showing you how it all started.

Thanks to Roadtrippers I was able to set ahead and see how long it would take for me to get to certain destinations and how much gas it would take.

My philosophy lately in life has been to be as progressive as I can each day at a time, focused on the now and not the then. However, we all need change to advance in life. Yes, that is a risk in itself but it just has to be done if you want to "Level Up". That is what I stuck by, as I walked out the door one last time and packed up my life in literally 2 days.

Sayonara for now California.

Adventuring across the country in uncharted waters and unfamiliar territory.  On the journey ahead to see familiar faces and reconnect with old friends.

The game of Life isn't the easiest game in the world, if so we'd all be enjoying our cake by now. The journey ahead doesn't have to be a 1 person game. I luckily thought of this before hand, my friend so happened to be available to start a new chapter himself.

Bill the Adventurer, along for the wild ride ahead. What lies ahead for the both of us is just a mystery waiting to be solved.

That day I trusted my gut and left on the first day of the year to set off a new Chapter in my life. Who knows whats next for Bill and I, I'm just taking life one day at a time until I reach where I want to be next in life. For now, Adventure on and enjoy what's at hand.

Look forward for more of the Road Ahead; one last look of some California Beauty in the Mojave.

A Journey Ahead

Things are progressing here; as I took each day one day at a time and pushed myself to get to where I'm at. I could not have gotten here without the help of some very special friends & family. My next Chapter in life is coming up sooner than I can even imagine. As of December 30th I'll be splitting out of LA for a little while and starting a new journey.  I've set out and am going to make a cross country road trip. Reconnecting with old friends along the way, starting the new year fresh and hopefully leaving a large imprint on others lives.

Dive Into A New World!

My final destination on my game of life is Cleveland, Ohio. So far, it's looking like a 36 hour drive and I may possibly do it solo with my camera gear and that's it. Just know, I'll be living my dreams and getting out into the world.  I landed a job offer for a short time being, still applying my creative field and using my photography magic to the fullest! The big picture is who knows whats next. I try to wonder and imagine my new path and new journey; although, all I can imagine is the thought of being still and aware of just what's still in front of me for the days I have left here.  I'll be back sooner than you can imagine LA, keep on your toes and watch out for this new road warrior!

Happy Holidays!

The Holidays are underway in all parts near and far. Time to give back & go that extra mile! At the end of the day everyone wants to think of themselves but this time makes us think more about everyone else. Any sort of gift is a plus; that is how you have to think of it, you need to be memorable and creative and just give from the heart.

Welcome to Geppetto's workshop. Magic and Holiday Cheer passed around the Sosa life.

Here's a view into one of my workshops. Show your holiday spirit and get out, create it already!  To those that have to travel, safe paths ahead to and from whatever destination you choose to go to. Sure, everyone gets upset about traveling during holiday seasons. Although, it is about going "Home" wherever that may be; or, finding your true home and just having  a good time with friends and family. Either way have some fun!

Holiday Drip the Cheer! ©Sosaphoto2013

During this cold winter time it's good to stay warm. Let's start that off by keeping your sweet tooth warm. It's good to sit out by the fire; kickback, relax and just enjoy what's in front of you and what's to come. We have to reflect on ourselves and how much we've done this past year.  Most importantly try to focus on what big adventures are to come! Wonder what bigger brighter spots to come in 2014! (No "burning" necessary)

From Me to You, Happy Holidays here at Sosaphoto and Have a Happy New Year!

Pub Crawl

This past week I found out one of my images made it all the way to Publication! Crawling my way into the editorial world. Thanks to the Fess Parker, published my work as an Ad insert for one of their unique accommodations!

Lately in life I've noticed a lot of my friends & family can't go to the next step in life & travel because of pets being by their side. A pet is more than a responsibility, they're a best friend for most and they must be along for the adventure, anyway possible! Fess Parker Double Tree is one of the only dog friendly hotels in Santa Barbara. If your ever in the area and need a weekend trip, just don't forget your best friend.

Published in Fido Magazine

This shoot was a ton of fun for me. Both dogs that I photographed were some of the most outgoing and personable dogs I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. What made this shoot fun was trying to keep the dogs calm, trying to get that scene that I pictured in my head to reality.

Hera, enjoying the view. ©Sosaphoto2013

The dogs are allowed on all parts of the property; however, there are certain buildings that allow the dog visitors residence of course. I'm sure Hera (above) loved the view she had that day. It sure was difficult to get her attention when the beach was literally across the street and the pool was right behind her. I know, so many options, so little time. Don't worry I'm sure she loved her stay either way.

Scarlett for Delivery! ©Sosaphoto2013

Don't try this at home! We conquered the impossible that day by getting Scarlett(above) on the luggage cart and keeping her nice and calm. She really wanted to see how hard the job was; apparently easier than she thought because she didn't have to do any of the pushing. For me, this shoot brought a lot of patience. Animals are a lot like children, you need to be calm around them but yet somehow pull their attention without having them get too excited.

Give Thanks & Tradition

This past week my life has felt like two completely different worlds. Thanksgiving, for me was a time to give back and give thanks to those who need that helping hand in life. I'm a big fan and supporter of helping out, especially those who truly need it. We all need a hand at something in life; may it be exercising, that extra push for a job, or even financially.

I was more than pleased to help out on my Thanksgiving to the Union Station Homeless Shelter. They had a Thanksgiving dinner in the park that day. Enjoy the show below and appreciate every moment ahead. Right now in life, I'm just trying to appreciate what's in front of me till this moment in time is all wrapped up and gone. Always try and stay focused on what's next at hand.

Marv Gross accepting the check from Bank of America on behalf of Union Station Homeless Services. Thanksgiving Goal met!

Volunteers coming in early to lend their time and give back.

A day to give back to thousands and just be grateful.

Some people volunteer as families to share the positive moment of helping others. This was Carmen and her sons first time giving back.

Huge turn out leads to a lot of happy faces. Entire families coming together for a free meal.

Marv Gross as he helps find the parents of Diego and Juan on a busy day at the park. (Don't worry they were found moments later)

The reward of suppling Thanksgiving for the children & their families.

Thanks sure is a word often used lightly, but try to appreciate it the more and more you use it. Thanksgiving was also a great time to see families come together and create their own traditions so that they can bond together and stick closer and closer each year. I hope everyone I know out there had an Awesome Thanksgiving and just try and have this time to bring your families together and create your own tradition just like Carmen and her son volunteering for the first time and hopefully more to come!
